Graphics and The Modern Day Marketer

The simple rule of thumb for any Graphic Artist is to "attract" and not "detract" from the over all design of a Product or Website.

Unfortunately, many Graphic Artists are trying to impress potential customers with ungodly animated GIF's and multi - colored Internet Sites that create a carnival atomosphere to otherwise great websites and products.

The Mission
Recently, I was asked to critique a websites, rate the content, structure and graphics by the owner. I was asked to find out why is the Homepage also doubles as the Exit page. It seems that everyone that lands on the Homepage jumps ship from there in 2.3 seconds.

Like most people, I jumped at the chance to voice my opinion and accepted the offer.

After clicking on the link I was greeted with The Flying Wizard and so many blinking Christmas Lights (In July) that I almost had an epileptic seizure.

I still don't know what the site is about because of of the quick click off.

I sent the owner of this Sideshow my recommendations and a few Template to use - all for free.
His reply was" That it cost a ton of money to have "HIS" Site built and that my opinion was based on my inability to produce such stunning graphics."

Stunning is the correct word.

I was temporarily stunned, just like all the other unlucky people that had the misfortune of landing smack dab in the middle of this Carny, but just long enough to hit the Retreat Button on my Mouse.

The Right Stuff
There's a right way and a wrong way for graphics to enhance a Webpage or product and the above example was definitely the wrong way.

It wasn't due to my " inability to produce such stunning graphics." I can produce animations that can induce seizures with the best of them, but I won't.

His problem was due to the Las Vegas style of presentation that most of his visitors jumped ship on him.

Graphics should put a face on a product or Brand a website with a logo that people will recognize.

That's what any smart Designer will do. He/she will create create a product or Brand awareness that will push customers to delve deeper into a Site, push the pay button and not push them away.
